Material properties of smectic layers and the formation of modulated and cubic smectic phases
نویسنده
چکیده
2014 Models are proposed for a modulated smectic phase (Ã) and the cubic smectics (D and a nameless phase) that are based on the material properties of the single smectic layer such as curvature elasticity and boundary (or inversion wall) energies. They furnish criteria for the transformation of regular smectics (A, C) into these phases. J. Physique 48 (1987) 291-295 FTVRIER 1987, :

Dynamics of the modulated crystal smectic B phase of 50.7 by neutron scattering experiments
2014 The cooperative nature of the molecular motions in the crystal smectic B and smectic G phases of 50.7 have been investigated using coherent neutron scattering from a fully deuterated sample. It is concluded that the incommensurable transverse modulation of the smectic B layers, which develops as the smectic G phase is approached, is a static deformation of the layers. New excitations in th...
متن کاملInduced Smectic Phases II. Influence of the Amino Substituent on the Induction of Smectic Phases *
The diagrams of state have been studied for some liquid crystal mixtures which show the induction of smectic phases. Each of the systems studied contains one component with an amino group which influences the polarity and the electron donor property of the molecules. The discussion of the diagrams of state, of the thickness of the smectic layers and of the colours of the mixtures, which indicat...
متن کاملElectroclinic effect and modulated phases in smectic liquid crystals.
We explore the possibility that the unusually large electroclinic effect observed in the smectic-A phase of a ferroelectric liquid crystal arises from the presence of an ordered array of disclination lines and walls in a smectic-C* phase. If the spacing of these defects is in the subvisible range, this modulated smectic-C* phase would be similar macroscopically to a smectic-A phase. The applica...
متن کاملPhotocontrol of Smectic Spacing
We report on the results of optical, X-ray and NMR studies of light-induced phenomena in smectic phases triggered by molecular phototransformations. UV irrddiation causes trans-to-cis isomerization of the dopant molecules while irradiation in thc visible part of the spectrum facilitates cis-to-trans lelaxation. Cis-to-trans isomerization decrcaws the smectic layers' spacing; as the result. a sm...
متن کاملAn atomistic description of the nematic and smectic phases of 4-n-octyl-4' cyanobiphenyl (8CB).
We report the results of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of 4-n-octyl-4' cyanobiphenyl (8CB) on samples of 750 and 3000 molecules showing the spontaneous formation of the nematic phase and then of smectic layers by gradually cooling down from the isotropic phase. Orientational, positional, and mixed order parameters, layer spacing, translational diffusion tensor components and their te...
